How To Clean Mold Off Leather Jacket

Safety First:

  • Work in a ventilated area: Mold spores can be irritating, so wear a mask like this one to avoid inhaling them.

The N95 respirator mask is NIOSH approved and designed to filter and block particles. Ideal for industrial use and provides a physical barrier to block pollutants and reduce the risks of spreading viruses and breathing non-oil airborne particles.

  • Consider gloves: Especially if the mold covers a large area, wearing gloves like these vinyl gloves can help protect your skin.

Vinyl Exam Gloves are designed for quick tasks and allow for easy removal and replacement of gloves in busy medical, or industrial locations. These high-quality patient examination gloves are intended for medical purposes to be worn by examiners to prevent contamination between the patient and the examiner. Vinyl gloves are a great alternative for those with latex allergies.

Removing the Mold:

1. Brush Loose Mold: Take the jacket outside and gently brush off any surface mold with a soft-bristled brush like this one . Work outdoors to avoid spreading spores inside.

A soft-bristled brush is a brush that has bristles made of a flexible and gentle material. These bristles are designed to be non-abrasive and suitable for cleaning delicate surfaces without causing scratches or damage.
Soft-bristled brushes are ideal for cleaning leather jackets, handbags, and other leather items to remove dust and dirt without damaging the material.

2. Choose your cleaning solution:

  • Mild Soap: For light mold, a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap can be effective.
  • Distilled White Vinegar: A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water can also work. Vinegar has some disinfectant properties.

Important: Always do a patch test on an inconspicuous area of the leather before applying any cleaning solution to the entire jacket. This ensures the solution won't discolor the leather.

Cleaning the Jacket:

1. Dampen a microfiber cloth: Dip the cloth in your chosen cleaning solution, wring it out thoroughly so it's barely damp.

2. Gently wipe the affected areas: Use circular motions to remove the mold. Don't scrub or soak the leather.

3. Rinse: Use a clean, damp cloth with plain water to remove any cleaning solution residue.

4. Dry Completely: Pat the jacket dry with a clean towel and let it air dry completely in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources.

After Cleaning:

  • Leather Conditioner: Once the jacket is completely dry, consider applying a leather conditioner to replenish moisture and protect the leather, especially after cleaning with vinegar.

If the mold is extensive or persists after cleaning, it's best to consult professional leather cleaner. They have the expertise and equipment to handle more stubborn mold problems.
